LIBRARY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

 

Library collections are classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification and "Library of Congress" for the subject heading. The collections has been categorized into variety subdivision such as:

 

1. Reference Collection: This collection comprises of a wide variety of materials including dictionaries, encyclopaedias, handbooks, atlases, and annual reports. The call number for this collection begins with the letter "R". The Blue Spot on the spine label identifies this collection.

 

2. White Spot: This is a collection of books on all subjects and is accessible to user for loan. A white spot on the spine label identifies this collection.

 

3. Yellow Spot [Short-Term Loan (STL)]: Copies of selected books, which are in high demand, are set aside for a shorter period of loan. These books are shelved as the yellow spot collection and can be identified by a yellow spot on the spine label.

 

4. Red Spot: This collection comprises heavily used textbooks, reference books, course notes required by lecturers, etc. A red spot on the spine label identifies this collection.

 

5. Green Spot: This collection is meant for lecturers. A green spot on the spine label identifies this collection.

 

6. Orange Spot: This collection will be facilitated by the Library staff. Students must request the book(s) personally and surrender their student ID card throughout usage.

 

7. Borrowing from the Thesis Collection: This collection comprises theses and projects done by students who were previously enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical & Electronic programme, Diploma in Information & Communication Technology programme, and Master of Business Administration programme. Students can borrow items from this collection for only one day.

 

8. Magazines: The latest published magazines are placed on the magazine racks.

 

9. Multimedia Materials: Non-printed materials are kept at the Circulation Counter. The audio-visual materials include compact discs. The user must request assistance from the library staff to access this collection.

 

10. Newspapers: The library subscribes to the following local newspapers:

  • The Star 

  • New Straits Times

  • Berita Harian 

  • Nanyang Siang Pau

 
11. Past-Year Examination Papers and Project Papers: Past-year examination papers and project papers are also made available upon request at the Circulation Counter. Users can also access past year questions online (only available for Diploma courses)
